Glasgow teaching staff are preparing to walk out in protest against the city council’s education cuts.

In a recent statutory ballot organised by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), an overwhelming 95% of teachers and associated professionals backed strike action.

This decision follows official figures showing that Glasgow City Council cut 120 full-time equivalent teaching posts last year—the highest number in Scotland—and has yet to commit to restoring teacher numbers to 2023 levels as promised.

Teachers are currently set to strike on Thursday, February 20, which could lead to school closures.

EIS General Secretary Andrea Bradley stated that the strike is a united stand against what she called “damaging” cuts that are harming the quality of education and the learning experience of thousands of pupils.

She said: “It’s not too late for Glasgow City Council to admit their approach is failing and cancel these deep cuts."

EIS Glasgow Local Association Secretary Jane Gow echoed these sentiments, insisting that unless the council makes a clear commitment to halt the cuts, every member in the city’s education system will join the strike.

Further details on the planned action are expected to be released shortly as teachers, parents, and community members brace for a showdown over the future of Glasgow’s schools.
