Taxi drivers across Glasgow are telling us they are being forced to give up work for the next two weekends because of the UCI Cycling World Championships.

Major roads in the city centre and West End are shut until a minute to midnight on Tuesday for the races.

John Wallace does private hires and told Clyde 1: "People around this city are still trying to get on with their day to day lives and can't just come to a standstill.

"It feels like there has not been a lot of forward planning from the council for the event.

"During COP26 and the Commonwealth Games the disruption was kept to an absolute minimum."

Roads will close again next weekend for more racing action.

John added: "Not many people can afford to just take 10 days off work because there is a cycle race on.

"I was dropping people off on Thursday night and they did not even know about the closures."

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “The Get Ready Glasgow campaign has been running since March 2023 and undertaken a programme of communication and engagement work to tell businesses and residents about the event, its impact on the city and how they can plan ahead.

"This work has included attending community council meetings, drop-in sessions, letters to residents and providing information through getreadyglasgow.com and social media.

"We have a number of ways in which people can get in touch with us including through email and telephone and can provide information in alternative formats, if requested.”
