A Glasgow solicitor, who was "experiencing financial difficulties", ripped off the legal firm he was working for of over £21,000.

Paul O'Donnell pled guilty to embezzling £21,485 from the premises of Thorley Stephenson in Edinburgh between November 1, 2012, and September 1, 2014.

The Sheriff Court in Edinburgh learned the 34 year old had joined the company after working for a firm of solicitors in Hamilton.

Investigations began when it appeared that payments made to O'Donnell by clients, who had sought legal advice from him, had not been lodged with the firm's cashiers office.

He was arrested in February 2015 after police were called in to investigate.

The court was told he had been declared bankrupt and his house was going on the market in the next week or so.

Sheriff Crowe deferred sentence on O'Donnell until July and told him: "I will like to see that repayment has been made. The firm will have to repay the clients and retain their reputation".
