Glasgow City Council has confirmed that Monday September 19 will be a public holiday for the city.

This comes after the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who passed away on Thursday.

The funeral will be held on September 19 in London with her coffin is currently in Edinburgh where she lies in rest at Holyroodhouse before being moved to St Giles' Cathedral.

The State Funeral will be considered national day of mourning and with that schools and nurseries will close, the council has confirmed.

School closures confirmed on social media

They posted on social media to say: "On Mon 19/09, a Public Holiday has been granted for a day of National Mourning for the State Funeral of HM The Queen.

"On this day we'll continue to provide essential services, keeping our city mobile, clean and safe. All other services including schools and nurseries will close."

Where else will schools be closed?

East Renfrewshire, West Dunbartonshire and North & South Lanarkshire have also written to parents to confirm that Monday 19th will be a public holiday in the area and therefore schools will be shut.

Some areas in Scotland observe a public holiday weekend from Friday, September 16, to Monday, September 19, which would mean schools would already be closed.

Schools in North Ayrshire were already closed for an in-service day on Monday, teachers have also now been informed this has been cancelled so that they too can observe the national day of mourning.

Elsewhere in Scotland

East Lothian, Midlothian and South Ayrshire all have their September weekend between those two dates.

East Ayrshire and Edinburgh schools also have a public holiday on Monday, September 19, as do schools in Fraserburgh and Portlethen in Aberdeenshire, and Aberlour, Craigellachie, Knockando, Tomintoul, Dufftown, Burghead, Hopeman, Lossiemouth, Forres and Rothes in Moray.
