Glasgow pizza among top 5 most ordered Deliveroo items across UK
Frank's Pizza co-owners John and Craig say they're "absolutely thrilled" to make the list
Pepperoni pizza from a Glasgow pizzeria is among the most ordered foods across the UK from Deliveroo this year.
Deliveroo has revealed its top trending food deliveries of 2024 with pepperoni pizza from Frank’s Pizza in Finnieston snatching fifth place on the UK list.
Opened in 2021, the pizzeria is co-owned by life-long friends John and Craig and serves a selection of New York-style pizzas – including the popular pepperoni dish.
John and Craig, the co-owners of Frank’s Pizza in Finnieston, are “absolutely thrilled” to be featured in the Deliveroo’s top UK list.
Owners came up with idea for Frank's after losing jobs during Covid
Craig told Clyde 1: “John and I have been friends for years and years, and we’ve always worked in nightclubs, in and around Glasgow. The Covid lockdown happened, which meant we were essentially out of our jobs. It just so happened that we both had the idea to open up a pizza shop in Glasgow.”
He thanked their customers and added: “It’s pretty incredible that people in Glasgow love pepperoni pizza so much that it’s the number 5 most bought item in the UK via Deliveroo and the 16th on Earth, given we’ve only got one site.”
The restaurant is named after Craig’s late French bulldog, which is featured in the shop’s logo and merchandise.
Deliveroo said the list highlights a rise in the "TikTok to table" effect, as Deliveroo customers seem keen to follow online trends. Frank’s Pizza may have benefitted from this phenomenon, as the small business has amassed hundreds of thousands of views on the social media platform TikTok.
Boneless chicken wings from Wingstop top the list
This year, the UK's most popular food delivery item ordered on Deliveroo is boneless chicken wings from Wingstop, an international restaurant chain founded in Texas. Wingstop has branches across England, Scotland and Wales – including a Glasgow branch located at St Enoch’s Shopping Centre.
The second and third most popular delivery orders made in the UK are Caesar salads by restaurants in London, followed by a whole Waitrose cucumber at number 4.
For the first time in the UK’s top list is a bottle of white wine from Co-op, ordered mostly by London residents - just behind a bunch of Sainsbury bananas in ninth place.
Deliveroo vice president of regional growth Jeff Wemyss said: “We’re thrilled to unveil our eighth annual list of Deliveroo’s 100 most trending dishes and essentials.
“Most notably, we've spotted the highest number of grocery essentials making our Deliveroo 100 list, with a massive 600% increase since 2022, as consumers put everything from cucumbers to white wine in their baskets.”
