A former East Dunbartonshire Tory council leader has been sentenced to 22 months in prison for romance fraud and embezzlement.

Andrew Polson, 53, was found guilty of defrauding a woman of £188,000 by convincing her to provide money under the false pretence of investing in property with him.

He was also convicted of embezzling over £9000 from a charity-funded community radio station where he worked as a director.

The sentencing took place at Glasgow Sheriff Court earlier after he was found guilty last month.

Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Campbell said: “Polson abused the trust placed in him and acted dishonestly to gain substantial sums of money from his victim and from a charity.

“This case illustrates how personal relationships can be exploited for financial gain and the harm this can cause.

“Police Scotland remains committed to thoroughly investigating financial crimes and bringing those responsible to account.”

Those who believe they have been a victim of fraud are encouraged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
