Council tax across Glasgow could be set to rise by around 7% from April despite the local authority having more cash for public services this year than first expected.

The administration will meet later to set out spending plans for the next 12 months.

Ricky Bell is the deputy leader of the local authority and treasurer.

He told Clyde 1: "We don't have a spending gap this year, we actually have some surplus money and we are considering having a small additional council tax increase year that we would ringfence.

"The money would be used for cleaning the city, investing in roads and fixing potholes.

"We want to put money into cleansing teams to improve road sweeping and bulk uplifts to try to make the city look better."

However, opposition parties are warning it's not a cause for celebration and increasing council tax is a cut in itself.

Jill Brown from Glasgow Labour told Clyde 1: "Given the year upon year of cuts we have received from the Scottish Government, this still does pose an issue as to how we sustain public services.

"The UK Government provided the Scottish Government with an additional £5.2 billion pounds this year and it is really disappointing to see that Glasgow hasn't had its fair share of funding."
