A drunk driver caught behind the wheel almost five times over the limit has avoided jail.

Frank McNaught, 55, was snared by police in Glasgow’s Dalmarnock Road in March this year.

McNaught was found to have 100 milligrams in 100 millilitres of alcohol in his system when the legal limit is 22 milligrams.

He pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to driving having consumed alcohol.

McNaught was working as a bus driver at the time of the offence.

The court heard police officers approached his Vauxhall Corsa at half 10 that night.

Prosecutor Shona Howie said: “His speech was slurred and there was a strong smell of alcohol.”

Police arrested him and took him to a police office for a breath test.

Today, McNaught was ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid work by Sheriff Alan Findlay.

He was also banned from driving for 18 months.

Lawyer, Michael O’Neill, defending said: “This is a serious matter with his previous convictions.

“There is a gap in offending between 2010 and 2019 and this was an unfortunate event.”

The court heard that McNaught, from Rutherglen, was offered as a forklift driver.

In sentencing McNaught, Sheriff Findlay said: “Given your record and the nature of the offence, this is an alternative to custody.

“If you breach this order you will be brought back here.
