Glasgow Cat Killer Jailed

Published 6th Jan 2015

A man has been jailed after he killed a cat while a child was in the same house in Glasgow's southside. Gareth McGarry then dumped the dead pet outside the flat he shared with his girlfriend on Old Rutherglen Road. The 34 year old was caught after his partner alerted his sister and eventually the police and Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were contacted. McGarry pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to killing the cat on September 5, last year, after his trial started. Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC told McGarry he used "unimaginable cruelty" towards the animal and jailed him for nine months. She ordered that he does not own or keep animals for five years. McGarry has a long history of violence and a criminal record spanning 20 years. He was freed early from a 42 month sentence for a violent attack when he smashed a plate over a man's head.
