Glasgow airport incident stood down following cargo 'spillage'

The international area of Glasgow Airport was evacuated this afternoon following concerns about a piece of cargo on-board a KLM flight from Amsterdam.

The international area of Glasgow Airport was evacuated this afternoon following concerns about a piece of cargo on-board a KLM flight from Amsterdam.

Pictures on social media showed police, ambulance and fire crews lining up to meet the aircraft on the tarmac.

Emergency services were called around 10am and the incident was stood down around 2.50pm. Police confirmed there had been a spillage from within a cargo hold.

They also closed the M8 slip road at J29 Paisley St James at the airport while the incident was on-going.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said: “At approximately 10am today, the airport fire service attended an arriving KLM flight in response to concerns raised over a piece of cargo.

"The incident was stood down at 13.25 after the package was declared safe by emergency services.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Emergency services are in attendance and the package is being examined.

"An exclusion zone has been put in place as a precaution and enquiries are continuing."Police were called around 11.15am on Friday 4 October to a report of a spillage from cargo on board a plane at Glasgow Airport."
