Despite claiming a record six medals at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, Duncan Scott still thinks there is more to come.
The Scottish swimmer claimed four bronze, one silver and most significantly one gold medal on the Gold Coast to become his nation's most decorated athlete at an individual Games, thus growing his reputation as one of the sport's rising stars.
He is now facing the prospect of a home European Championships, with Glasgow set to host the multi-sport event, and Scott is confident he has more to give.
“I am really happy with how I swam and it was nice to get the rewards for the effort I put in,'' the 21-year-old told Press Association Sport. “I like to think of it as the basement of what I would like to achieve rather than the ceiling.''
Having beaten the likes of Kyle Chalmers and Chad le Clos to win the 100 metre freestyle in Australia, Scott's star is now on the rise but he has downplayed the idea that he is on the way to becoming one of the big names in Scottish sport.
He said: “I am bigger now than I was, but there are so many names that are ahead of me and Scotland always has so many good sporting athletes.
“Within sport at the moment you have people like Andy Murray.
“He might have slipped down the rankings a bit but he is arguably one of Scotland's greatest ever sportsmen, and then the recently retired Sir Chris Hoy, who is arguably one of Scotland's greatest ever sporting heroes as well.
“I have been fortunate enough to watch these guys on TV and have their superb performances to watch.
“I have spoken to them a couple of times, more Chris than Murray.
“It is great to have them to look up to and they are such great idols for sport and athletes in general.''
On his hopes for competing in Glasgow, he added: “For me it is about yearly improvements.
“I had quite a good Commonwealth Games but that was a trial and it would be nice to move things on.
“This is the main one for British Swimming and the main event.'
