The George Square entrance to Glasgow Queen Street train station is to close as major renovation works begin this weekend.

The ticket office in the transport hub will move to the former Vale pub on Dundas Street.

Hoardings will be erected on both Dundas Street and West George Street, where bus stops will be relocated and the taxi rank will close.

However, ScotRail say customer journeys should not in general be disrupted by the work.

Nick King, from the ScotRail Alliance, told Clyde News: "This Sunday sees the start of our redevelopment of Glasgow Queen Street station.

"Over the next two years we'll be completely transforming what is already Scotland's third-busiest station, making it much larger, much more easily accessible and improving the passenger facilities.

"While we're doing that however, we will have to make some changes to the way the station operates.

"The main one the passengers will notice is that we're going to move the travel centre and the ticket office out of the main station building and onto a shop front on Dundas Street. That'll be the main change."

He added: "There'll be no change to the timetables, or the journey time of trains.

"There will be some changes in the way the station operates, the walking routes around the station and the location of the ticket office.

"People will be able to continue their daily commute as they do already."

Network Rail have thanked station users for their patience and co-operation as they deliver an 'important investment' in the station.

Nick explained: "We'll be making the station much larger, expanding the size of the concourse to create more space for passengers, lengthening the platforms so that we can run longer, faster electric trains.

"We'll also be making modifications to the entrances and exits to make them much more accessible for all passengers - by introducing both lifts and ramps - where we currently don't have those at every entrance and exit."
