Fugitive who fled to Thailand over indecent images of children jailed
William Dempster had a stash of 60,000 images
A man who fled to Thailand after being convicted of possessing thousands of indecent images of children has been sent to prison after being extradited back to Scotland.
William Dempster, who is originally from the Tayside area, was arrested by police in May - eight years after he was found with 60,000 pictures at his home in Lanarkshire.
After being convicted in 2014, Mr Dempster travelled to Bangkok.
However, he was later discovered following a joint operation between Police Scotland and their counterparts in Thailand.
The 46-year-old was today jailed for 18 months and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
Welcoming his sentence, Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Livingstone, of Police Scotland said:
“Police Scotland officers are committed to relentlessly pursuing criminals who think they are untouchable or above the law and Dempster thought he could evade justice by fleeing the country.
"Our officers worked tirelessly in partnership with our law enforcement colleagues and did not give up on arresting him and bringing him back to Scotland to face the consequences of his crimes.
“I am grateful and pleased to acknowledge the assistance from colleagues in this country and abroad in locating and arresting Dempster which has culminated in this positive and satisfying conclusion today.”
