Four women have been seriously injured in a one-car crash in Glasgow.

The accident happened on the M8 westbound near the Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre at around 18:50 on Friday evening.

The women were travelling in a red Suzuki Swift which struck the safety barrier before rolling onto the grass verge.

The 66-year-old driver and two passengers aged 67 and 59 were rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, while a 56-year-old passenger was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

All four are being treated for serious injuries.

One lane of the motorway was closed for several hours while officers carried out an investigation.

Police Constable Thomas Lynch, from the Road Policing Complex at Helen Street, Govan, said:

“This was an incident which has left four women with serious injuries.

"Police Officers are carrying out enquiries to piece together the exact circumstances of the incident and would appeal to anybody who may have seen the car prior to the crash taking place to come forward.

"The M8 would have been extremely busy at that time of night, with people heading home from work or perhaps going to and from the Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre.

"We would ask anyone with any information to contact the Road Policing Complex via 101, quoting incident number 3099 of Friday 1 December 2017.”
