A former headteacher from Stirling is being recognised for transforming the fitness of five million children around the world at the Pride of Scotland Awards.

Elaine Wyllie started up the Daily Mile at St. Ninian's Primary in 2012 when she discovered pupils struggled to run around the school building.

Last night she was crowned the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Glasgow at the glamourous bash.

She told Clyde 1: "One teacher in the school came to me to say that the class was unfit and I suggested the children were taken out every day for 15 minutes.

"They were encouraged to run, walk or jog and just remain active for the duration.

"We expected nothing from it, but in fact they loved it and enjoyed being outdoors together.

"There was no pressure at all and they were in control."

The scheme has now been taken up by 20,000 schools in 96 different countries.

Elaine added: "Across the world, children are getting fit in three or four weeks with the Daily Mile.

"It feels amazing to be recognised and I get a warm glow when I think of all the children across the world who're doing this."
