A former soldier is behind bars tonight after being charged with murdering his charity worker girlfriend and trying to kill a teenager.

Falklands War veteran Gary Brown, 54, is said to have murdered Alyson Watt, 52, in the Ralston area of Paisley, Renfrewshire, on Friday.

Brown is also accused of trying to kill a 16-year-old boy who remains in a critical condition at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Brown, of Uddingston, was arrested in connection with the violent attacks on the pair and was taken to hospital to be treated for a neck wound.

He spent several nights in hospital in Dumfries, before being held in police custody at Dumfries Police Station.

He appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court today, with his neck wound stapled, to face the charges of murder and attempted murder.

He made no plea to the charges during the short hearing, where he was represented by defence Solicitor Advocate Chris McKenna, of law firm Tod and Mitchell.

Sheriff Tom Ward continued the case for prosecutors to investigate further and remanded Brown, who is understood to have worked for Scottish Power as an electrician, in custody.

He is expected to make a second court appearance in connection with the case next week.
