Teenager receives life sentence after drunken Rutherglen murder
Brian McKillop had been drinking all day on his 18th birthday, when he murdered 51-year-old James Britton.
A teenager who murdered a stranger on his 18th birthday is receiving a life sentence.
Brian McKillop violently attacked 51-year-old James Britton following a day of drinking in Rutherglen.
Mr Britton died of his injuries after McKillop kicked him in the head and body until he was unconscious.
Appalling Violence
David Green, Procurator Fiscal for Homicide and Major Crime, said: “This was a random and unprovoked attack on a stranger. An attack carried out with an appalling level of sustained violence.
“James Britton’s friends and family have suffered a devastating loss, and our thoughts are with them as they attempt to come to terms with what has happened.”
Guilty Plea
McKillop will serve a minimum sentence of 11 years and three months after he today pleaded guilty to the murder, which took place on 20 October 2021.
Brian McKillop also pleaded guilty to robbery when he appeared at the High Court in Glasgow. He stole prescription medicine from Mr Britton.
Mr Britton, affectionally known as ‘Moose’ was returning from visiting friends when he was attacked.
He was spotted by passing motorists outside a car wash on Farmeloan road. Paramedics and police attended the scene, and McKillop was arrested.
When taken to the police station he was found to have blood on his shoes and jeans.
