A five-year-old girl killed in a car crash in Paisley has been named by police.

Niree Johnstone was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow after the incident in Gleniffer Road at around 4.50pm on Tuesday but later died of her injuries.

She was travelling in a black Vauxhall Corsa being driven by a 20-year-old woman who was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries. She is described as being in a stable condition.

The Corsa was travelling in Sergeantlaw Road and collided with a Grey BMW 120 when it left the junction on to Gleniffer Road, police said.

A three-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Corsa was taken in for observation but has since been released and a 24-year-old man, the front-seat passenger, was uninjured.

The 34-year-old man driving the BMW was also uninjured.

The road was closed for six hours as crash investigators conducted an examination of the scene.

Officers said the family of Niree, from Paisley, have been informed.

Sergeant Kenneth Malaney said: This was a serious road crash which has resulted in the death of a young girl.

Road policing officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances which led to this collision.

The road was moderately busy at the time of the incident and it is likely that the collision was witnessed by a number of passing motorists.

I would ask that anyone who witnessed the collision to please get in contact with any information you may have.''
