A Cumbernauld mum's warning of the dangers of using fireworks, after her son was left seriously injured following a private display nine years ago.

Ben McCabe was just four years old when they attended the display organised by friends, when a firework shot into the crowd and landed in Ben's jacket.

The 13-year old still attends hospital appointments and receives treatment for his scars.

This year, Amy is asking people to take extra care when using fireworks, as all public displays are cancelled.

Amy said: "This year is going to be slightly different for Bonfire Night.

"There are going to be no public displays which means there are more people willing to take a risk and do fireworks at home.

"In my experience, fireworks can go wrong even when you follow instructions.

"You really have to remember your children are precious and it's your job to protect them.

"If you are going to use fireworks at home, please keep your children indoors where they're well away.

"Fireworks can go wrong at any point.

"It's a split second and then everything goes to pot - and it does.

"It stays with you for the rest of your life."

Roddie Keith, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service area commander for Glasgow, said: "I do hope and urge people to keep themselves safe and to follow the guidelines and the restrictions in place.

"Please also remember that everytime our fire crews are mobilied, we're potentially exposing them to coronavirus.

"There are no organised events in Glasgow this year - that may tempt more people to have events in their own back gardens.

"I would urge people to think twice about that - please enjoy the 5th November but please do so safely."
