Pub "significantly damaged" after fire rips through city centre building

A fire has caused "significant damage" to the building in which iconic Glasgow pub the Old College Bar is situated.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze which happened, in the derelict premises directly above the High Street bar, just after 1.30am this morning.

Police are now appealing for witnesses of the incident, which prompted more than three dozen firefighters to race to the blaze, where some still remain along with police officers.

Detective Constable Neil Bonsor, of Stewart Street CID, said: “Our enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The blaze has caused significant damage to the building's structure.

“We would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, and who saw any suspicious behaviour to contact us.

“Anyone with information that could assist our investigation should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0119 of 4 May. Alternatively a report can be made to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
