Two elderly men die in Rutherglen crash

Another man, 34, has been arrested in connection with the collision

Two elderly men have died in a two-vehicle crash in Rutherglen.

The incident, involving a Mercedes C220 and a Ford Mondeo, happened around 11.50pm on Friday in Mill Street at the junction with Kings Park Avenue.

Emergency services attended and the 73-year-old passenger of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 80, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he died a short time later.

The driver of the Ford, a 34-year-old man, was not injured and has been arrested in connection with the collision.

The road was closed to allow investigation work to be carried out and recovery arranged. It remains closed at this time.

Sergeant Gemma Blackadder said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who died as a result of this incident.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash and who may have witnessed it or have dash cam footage to contact us.”
