EXCLUSIVE: Girlfriend of Ayrshire teenager who died after being hit by a lorry questions police response
19 year old Dylan Murphy was knocked down on the motorway near Carlisle in February
The girlfriend of a teenager from Irvine who was knocked down on the motorway outside Carlisle says his death could have been avoided.
Dylan Murphy was hit by a lorry on the M6 in the early hours of the 23rd of February - he died just under a week later from his injuries.
His partner Tammy Smith says the 19-year old had been wandering around for 4 hours before the accident.
She told our sister station Westsound News 3 separate people called police to raise concerns about his wellbeing in that time.
Also that the last of these calls was made from an emergency phone at the side of the motorway to say he was walking along the route 'looking exhausted' - he was knocked down at 3.18am
A Police spokesperson said: “This matter was referred to the IOPC, included in the referral were three calls made by members of the public. Having reviewed the incident and the calls, the IOPC concluded that the response to the calls and incident were appropriate and they will not be investigating further.
“The matter was then referred back to Cumbria Police’s Professional Standards Department for an internal review. Both the calls and the incident were reviewed and it was concluded that no misconduct matters occurred and that the policing response was appropriate. No further investigation will take place.
“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Murphy
Tammy - who has a one year old son with Dylan - also spoke to us about the teen who she described as 'cheeky, boisterous...everyone loved him'
Around 50 of his friends and family also released balloons in Gretna in Dylan's honour.
