A man has appeared in court accused of murdering Emma Caldwell. Iain Packer, 49, allegedly assaulted the 27-year-old in 2005. Emma was reported missing in April 2005 before her body was found in woodlands near Biggar, South Lanarkshire, a month later.

Packer made no plea to the murder charge at a private hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court through his advocate John Brannigan.

He is also accused of numerous further charges which include rape, sexual assault and abduction.

He was remanded in custody pending further examination by sheriff Mark McGuire.

Packer, from Airdrie, will appear in court again within the next eight days.
