A 78-year-old was struck by a black Range Rover Evoke as she crossed Gartocher Road in the Sandyhills area of Glasgow at about 2pm on Thursday.
A number of people in the street tried to help her before paramedics arrived at the scene.
Two hours earlier, a 71-year-old woman was knocked down by a taxi in Princes Street, Edinburgh.
Both were taken to hospital and are said to be in a serious condition.
Police are investigating both crashes and have appealed for any witnesses.

"Although a number of people came to her assistance and looked after her until an ambulance arrived, we still need to speak to anyone who saw the crash take place.
"If you have any information you think will assist officers with their enquiries, then please contact the divisional road policing unit in Glasgow via 101."
Sergeant Iain Blain, of the Edinburgh road unit, said: "This collision has left a woman with serious injuries and we are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed it.
"We are still trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and I would ask anyone who was at the east end of Princes Street yesterday around noon who can assist us with our inquiries to please get in touch.
"In addition, anyone with any other information relevant to this investigation is asked to call us on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
