An elderly man has died in hospital after being hit by a van in Linwood.

The 84 year-old was crossing Abernethy Drive around 4.45pm yesterday evening when he was knocked down by the Vauxhall Combo.

The 51 year-old driver was uninjured and police are appealing for witnesses.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "An 84 year-old man has died in hospital after being struck by a van in Linwood on Tuesday 15 January 2018.

"Around 4.45pm on Tuesday afternoon, the 84 year-old man was crossing Abernethy Drive, Linwood, when he was struck by a Vauxhall Combo van being driven by a 51 year-old man.

"Emergency services attended and the elderly pedestrian was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. Hospital staff describe his condition as critical.

"The driver of the van was uninjured.

"Any witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist his investigation to contact his office through 101 quoting incident number 2539 of 15th January 2019."
