Dungavel immigration centre still open, a year after closure plans

Dungavel detention centre in Strathaven remains open and operational - more than a year after plans to close it were first announced.

A Home Office application for a new site was rejected by Renfrewshire Council in February.

They had proposed a new facility next to Glasgow Airport.

A Chinese man died at Dungavel a fortnight ago - and it's not the first time there've been deaths at the centre.

Campaigners say people need to be made aware of the 'horrible and inhumane' conditions at the centre.

Pinar Aksu was detained along with her family: 'From my memories it's like a prison.

'The UK is the only country that doesn't have a time limit on detention. Why do people not know when they will be let out? There are people who are detained for months and years. There cases seem to be lost in the immigration system.'

Positive Action in Housing says the only crime those being held have committed is wanting to live here.
