Drivers face 5 months of roadworks on the A8 in Greenock from today
The Scottish Water project is to fix long-term flooding problems
Five months of roadworks begin today on the the A8, the only main road linking Greenock to Glasgow and the central belt of Scotland.
The Scottish Water project is designed to solve a long-term flooding problem on the road, and engineers have now constructed a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) beneath Inverclyde Councilās roads depot in Pottery Street.
The next phase of the project is now to upgrade the sewer network on East Hamilton Street, and connect it to the new CSO, as part of a Ā£2.5 million project to tackle the flooding.
Motorists are being urged to leave extra time for journeys.
'Confident we can keep traffic moving'
Georgina Reid, Scottish Waterās regional affairs manager in the west said: āWe carried out some preparatory works over several weeks last month and the traffic management arrangements worked well.
āThey were effectively a dress rehearsal for the next five months and we are confident we can keep traffic moving.
āWe have been planning for this phase for many months, working with partners, stakeholders and local agencies to ensure as little disruption as possible while we carry out this vital project.
āThe important thing to remember is to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for journeys.ā
