Driver critical after Bellshill bypass crash
The road is still closed at the scene.
A driver's fighting for life after a head-on crash which closed the Bellshill bypass.
Around 0655 hours this morning, Wednesday 14 December 2016, a Citroen Picasso travelling north and a Vauxhall Movano van travelling south collided on the A725 near to the Raith Interchange at Bellshill.
The 38 year old male driver of the Picasso has been taken by ambulance to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary where staff describe his condition as critical.
The 44 year old male van driver sustained injuries to his hand and has been taken by ambulance to Monklands District General Hospital for treatment. Staff there describe his condition as stable.
The A725, between Bellziehill Roundabout and the Raith Interchange, remains closed in both directions whilst officers carry out their enquiries.
The closure caused severe congestion around the area during the morning peak and drivers are being warned to avoid the roads around there if at all possible.
Sgt Joe McGuckien, Roads Policing Unit, Motherwell, said:
"This road was very busy this morning and although we have spoken to a couple of witnesses, we still need more people who saw the crash happen to come forward.
"Anyone with information can contact the Motherwell Roads Policing Unit on 101."
