Dennistoun bomb scare was 'not a viable device'

Homes were evacuated and part of the M8 was closed through rush hour

Police have confirmed the item at the centre of a bomb scare in the east end of Glasgow yesterday which caused chaos for residents and rush hour commuters on the M8 wasn't a viable device.

People were evacuated from their homes around Alexandra Parade in Dennistoun, and a section of the motorway closed, after it was discovered at a business on Milnbank Street.

A statement released on Friday morning from the force said: “”Around 3.30pm on Thursday, 27 January, officers were called to a report of a suspicious package found within business premises on Milnbank Street, Glasgow.

“Officers attended and a cordon was put in place and a number of local residents were evacuated as a precaution. The M8 was closed eastbound between junction 14 and 15 and westbound from junction 12. The motorway was reopened around 6.30pm.

“Officers from EOD attended and examined the item who confirmed it was not a viable device. Police enquiries continue.”
