With over 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland and the number set to double in a generation, a new demonstration house in Ravenscraig will be launched.

It could make home life easier for those living with the condition.

Coinciding with Scottish Dementia Awareness Week and in conjunction with Alzheimer Scotland, BRE will unveil the Dementia Friendly House which highlights how adjustments to traditional properties could make living at home safer for the increasing number in the Scottish population who are being diagnosed with the condition annually.

It’s as Glasgow is aiming to become a dementia friendly city as part of a new strategy to support people with dementia to live well with the condition in the community.

One of the main themes of the strategy is to encourage and develop resilience within communities so that the impact of dementia is recognised throughout all walks of life, whether that’s a large organisation, a local service, a shop, a business, a neighbour or a friend.

The intention is to create the kind of capacity in the community that will enable people with dementia to enjoy the best quality of life possible and to ensure they are treated with dignity and respect.

Councillor Archie Graham, Chair of the Glasgow HSCP, said: “Dementia is a growing issue that we can ill-afford to ignore. By putting in place longer-term strategies now, we can begin to build the kind of wide-ranging response we need to address the issue of dementia in future.”
