Dame Esther Rantzen will be visiting the Glasgow Childline base today to celebrate 30 years of the charity that helps and supports young people.

The problems that children contact the helpline about have changed since the 24/7 service opened three decades ago. Abuse, neglect, and bullying are still among the most common problems. But there are new dangers too like cyber-bullying and low self-esteem exacerbated by the pressures of the online world.

Meanwhile, the dramatic growth of the online world means that the way children contact the charity is changing.

More than two thirds of contacts to Childline are now online. But it takes ten times longer to counsel a child when every question and answer has to be typed. Right now, advisors can only answer three out of every four children who contact Childline.
