Damaged cargo ship Solong on its way to Aberdeen

The cargo ship which hit an oil tanker in the North Sea is being towed to Aberdeen.

One crew member was killed when the Portuguese-flagged Solong crashed into the Stena Immaculate off of the Yorkshire coast earlier this month.

The captain's been charged with gross negligence manslaughter.

The Solong, which being hauled b a tug, is expected to arrive in the Granite City later this week.

Owners of the cargo vessel Ernst Russ said : "We are aware that HM Coastguard has confirmed Aberdeen as port of refuge, and we will understand more in the coming days and weeks as the vessel will be fully assessed by specialist marine assessors and insurers. We are very aware of the efforts and assistance from all those acting in the response. We want to thank everyone who has responded urgently and gallantly to this incident."

In a statement, Port of Aberdeen has said Solong "is arriving at South Harbour this week, having been designated as a port of safe refuge.

The vessel will be prepared for the next stage of salvage operations.

Port operations are unaffected and will continue as normal."
