A cyclist armed with a kitchen knife hurled homophobic abuse at a police officer in Govan.

Kevin O’Donnell, 29, was caught with the four-inch blade in January this year.

He was captured trying to flee the scene on his bicycle before calling an officer who arrested him a “p*r” and a f****t.”

O’Donnell pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to possession of a knife and acting in a threatening or abusive manner.

The hearing was told police stopped O'Donnell, also of Govan, after being clocked on CCTV with a blade.

Prosecutor Mark Allan added: “On their arrival, the item could be seen to glint as he discarded it nearby.”

O’Donnell, who has previous convictions for assault, then started ranting at an officer before making the offensive remarks.

Des Ziolo, defending, told the court the former Govan Housing Association employee blamed the offence on being intoxicated.

Sheriff Sean Murphy QC put O’Donnell on a community payback order for two years which includes 225 hours of unpaid work.

He was also placed on a restriction of liberty order for seven months keeping him indoors from 7pm until 7am.

As part of the order, O’Donnell will receive counselling for his drug and alcohol use.
