Hamilton teenager helps Team GB curlers win gold at the Winter Youth Olympics
The mixed team triumphed in the final in Gangwon.
Scottish curlers are bringing home gold after a thrilling victory in the final of the Winter Youth Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea.
Hamilton's Holly Burke, Logan Carson, Archie Hyslop and Tia Laurie make up the Team GB curlers who came from behind to secure the impressive win.
Carson led his team and beat Denmark 7-5 in the final after an extra end.
Stranraer’s Winter Olympic gold medallist in 2022 Vicky Wright, is delighted for the trio:
“I’m very, very proud of them. It was a hard-fought battle; they were 4-1 down at after two ends and came back to winning an extra which was a great solid performance. I’m really proud of these athlete’s, they’ve got a bright future ahead of them and I can’t wait to see what else they do.”
The trio has been training in the junior coaching programme at Dumfries Ice Bowl who has helped get them through the ranks.
Graham Sloan, Dumfries Curling Development Manager, is pleased to have these young athletes from the club in a major tournament:
“It’s absolutely fantastic having three junior curlers at the Youth Olympics all at the same time at such a young age so we’re really proud to have them in our junior club and representing Team GB in South Korea.”
He also says although it's just three athletes from the town this time round, you can expect to see many more coming through the ranks soon:
“For those who didn’t make it this time, I’m sure they will have learnt a lot from the process and hopefully be able to apply that to future opportunities and I’m sure we’ll see some of them on the world stage down the line somewhere in their curling careers.”
