Final plans for a major upgrade to the terminal at one end of Scotland's busiest ferry route are being published.

The basic facilities at at slipway at the north east end of the Isle of Cumbrae, which leave foot passengers and cyclists exposed to the sometimes wild Scottish weather, will be transformed under the plans.

The 10-minute crossing from Largs overtook the overtook the service to Brodick on the Ise of Arran as the busiest CalMac service last year.

707,480 passengers and 195,105 cars made the trip in 2024.

Getting queues off the road

A three-lane marshalling area will be created so traffic doesn't have to queue for around half a mile on the road, as happens frequently on busy days.

Foot passengers will also get somewhere to shelter from the rain in wet weather as well as a small indoor waiting room with toilets.

As befits one of the most popular places to go for a bike ride in Scotland, cyclists will get somewhere to store their bikes and carry out repairs.

The plans can be viewed and commented on here.
