A Cumbernauld mum is telling Clyde news of the dangers of home fireworks displays, after her son was left scarred for life when he was just four years old.

Amy McCabe and her son Ben were at a bonfire night display organised by friends eight years ago, when a firework shot into the crowd.

She said: "all the kids wanted a wee fireworks display and the neighbours all got together.

"After the fireworks had been lit, one I think had fallen over.

"It ended up inside Ben's jacket."

Ben, who is now 12 years old, still attends regular hospital appointments and still receives treatment for the scarring.

He said: "I just felt something pop inside my jacket. I was screaming in pain, but everyone else was screaming because they were having fun.

"My chest was affected from when it popped inside my jacket, and my leg was affected because they had to cut skin off my leg to put it on my chest."

Amy is now calling for a ban on home fireworks displays.

"To me, the general public shouldn't be allowed to buy that and go and set it off. Not without some kind of guidance"

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is at an organised display, such as the Strathclyde Country Park firework display.
