A couple are injured after being dragged along a road in Kilmarnock as a man stole their car.

He had been spotted deliberately damaging a number of vehicles in Low Glencairn Street next to Lidl and Maggie’s Bar and Kitchen around 6.25pm on Wednesday 5th January.

After striking their blue Mazda 2 vehicle, the couple inside confronted him. The suspect then jumped in the car and drove off, briefly dragging the pair along the street and causing them minor injuries.

At around 7pm on the same evening the car was found on fire within Tarryholme Drive, Irvine.

Police have launched an investigation to find the man responsible. He is described as white, between 20 and 30-years-old with a slim but muscular build, short hair and was wearing a blue jumper. It is believed he had previously been in the company of a larger built woman in her twenties.

Detective Inspector Andrea Templeton from Kilmarnock CID said: “Fortunately neither of the victims were seriously injured, but this was still a very frightening ordeal for them and it was made all the more distressing because of the theft of their vehicle.

“We are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry to identify the suspect and would ask anyone who recognises him, or who witnessed this incident, to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, if your vehicle was in Lower Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock, or Tarryholme Drive, Irvine during the evening of Wednesday 4 January and has dash-cam footage that may be able to assist with our investigation, then please also get in touch.

“Those with information can contact Kilmarnock CID via 101 and quote incident number 2396 of 5 January 2022. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
