Council leaders team up to back Clyde bridge plans
Glasgow City, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire Council bosses getting behind proposal for crossing as part of £78M riverside project
Three council Leaders have teamed up to look at possible locations for a new opening bridge across the Clyde.
The new crossing will be part of the £78 million Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside Project and funded by Glasgow City Region City Deal.
The Leaders of West Dunbartonshire, Glasgow City and Renfrewshire Councils believe that it will bring ‘significant investment, jobs and transport benefits to communities on both sides of the river and throughout the City Region.’
Councillor Martin Rooney, Leader of West Dunbartonshire Council said: “This landmark bridge will bring significant economic, regeneration and transport benefits to our area.
"The development will position our communities right at the heart of the regional economy and increase growth here in West Dunbartonshire by improving access to jobs, training and education, including the University of the West of Scotland, on the other side of the river.
"The improved infrastructure this project will deliver will open West Dunbartonshire to new visitors and opportunities and make our area an even more attractive prospect for those looking to invest.” The new bridge, which will accommodate vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, will increase the potential for business growth by improving connections with customers and suppliers on both sides of the river. It will also enhance access to land which is currently underused or derelict; unlocking the potential for regeneration and new developments in the Yoker, Clydebank and Renfrew areas. Councillor Mark Macmillan, Leader of Renfrewshire Council said, “This impressive addition to our infrastructure will complement other City Deal investments and help to make the area even more attractive to residents and businesses.
The sheer scale of investment in this area indicates the extent of its economic potential.” Councillor Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said; “The new bridge is a symbol of what can be achieved through this City Deal. It will not only connect communities across the Clyde, but improve people’s employment prospects, create the conditions for economic growth in the city region and be an inspiring addition to the waterfront.” The Glasgow City Region City Deal is investing more than £1billion on infrastructure projects throughout the region.
It will also support the creation of thousands of new jobs, assist thousands of unemployed people back to work, improve public transport, drive business innovation and growth, and generate billions of pounds of private sector investment.
