COP26: Glasgow set for 'extreme' travel disruption

Glasgow is preparing for major traffic disruption across the city centre as a large area is set to be locked down as the United Nation's hosts its annual climate summit in the city.

Around 20,000 accredited delegates will also be in attendance along with thousands of climate change activists who will come to the city to protest on the issues being discussed.

Around 10,000 police officers will also travel north to assist Police Scotland and 100,000 activist are also expected to take to the city's streets on November 6 as part of a climate march.

The event takes place at the SEC Campus (Hydro, SEC, Armadillo and Science Centre) and the area will be completely closed to the public during this time.

The Clydeside Expressway will be closed between Partick and Anderston for 23 days, between October 23 and November 15.

The council’s official alternate include the Clyde Tunnel, Dumbarton Road and Argyle Street, or Great Western Road, through Charing Cross.

COP 26 Road Closures & Exact Dates

Congress Road: Road Closed 0600hrs 10th October to 0600hrs 17th November.

Congress Way, Finnieston Quay, Tunnel Street, Stobcross Road (section Parallel to A814) and Castlebank Street: These road will be subject to lane restriction and road closures between the 17th to 23rd October. Full road closure 2100hrs 24th October to 0600hrs 21st November.

Clyde Arc and Lancefield Quay: Road Closure 2100hrs 23rd October to 0600hrs Monday 15th November. (Note Clyde Arc and Lancefield Quay will reopen to Service Buses Only at 0600hrs 24th October).

Finnieston Street – Houldsworth Street to Lancefield Quay: Road Closure 2100hrs 24th October to 0600hrs Monday 15th November. Local Access southbound will be maintained until 28th October.

Clydeside Expressway – Partick Interchange to Anderston (Jnct 19): Road Closure 2100hrs Saturday 23rd October to 0600hrs Monday 15th November.

Minerva Street - West Greenhill Place: Road Closed 0600hrs 28th October to 0600hrs 13th November. Local Access to private carparks maintained.

Diversion routes will be in place around the SEC to keep traffic moving and, as with previous city events, Local Area Traffic Management Plans are being developed to keep traffic moving for road users.

Pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained on Finnieston Street, Lancefield Quay and Clyde Arc at all times as will routes for emergency services.

The River Clyde will be closed to private and commercial vessels ahead of and during COP26. A safety zone may be established from the first tidal weir at Glasgow Green to a position just east of King George V Docks. This stretch of the river will not be able to host vessels or water-based activities around the summit site.

Businesses and residents directly affected by closures and LATMPs will receive specific communications to advise and support them to deal with the likely impact they may experience during specified periods, and the measures that will be put in place to minimise disruption.
