College Evacuated Amid Gas Leak

More than 1,000 college students and staff had to be evacuated after a gas leak.

A gas mains by South Lanarkshire College in East Kilbride was damaged during work by contractors, forcing the closure of the building and surrounding roads.

Fire crews were alerted to the leak at about 9.30am and helped evacuate around 1,300 people.

Nearby residents were asked to remain indoors with their windows closed while engineers from gas distribution company SGN attended the scene.

Spokeswoman Chloe Boyce said: One of our gas mains in College Way, East Kilbride, was damaged this morning by a third-party contractor working in the area.

We were alerted at approximately 9.30am and quickly attended the site in our capacity as the gas emergency service in Scotland."

South Lanarkshire College was evacuated in advance of our arrival on site."

Our engineers are currently on site and are working hard to make our repair as quickly as possible."

This is a particularly challenging job for us, however we will complete the work as soon as we can."

The roads which were closed earlier today have now reopened. We are sorry for any inconvenience this incident may have caused and we'd like to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out our repair.''
