A THUG carried out a brutal street attack on a former friend - amid claims he'd once kissed his girlfriend. William Winton battered and stamped upon defenceless William McCallum during the assault last August. The 48 year-old victim was left badly injured after also being kicked "like a football". Winton was jailed for six years at the High Court in Glasgow after he pled guilty to assaulting Mr McCallum to the danger of life. Lord Bannatyne told the 53 year-old that the attack had been "utterly senseless". Mr McCallum had been in Brown Avenue, Clydebank last August 1 when Winton suddenly appeared and started hitting him. Despite a passer-by yelling to stop, Winton went on to punch, kick, stamp and jump on his stricken victim. The thug, of Onslow Road, Clydebank, then walked off leaving Mr McCallum unconscious in the street. One witness said his face "looked out of shape" after being set upon. Mr McCallum suffered a number of injuries including a broken nose and a fractured cheekbone. He has since passed away although his death was not linked to the attack. The court heard how the men had been "close friends" until claims Mr McCallum had kissed Winton's girlfriend two years ago. Louise Arrol, defending, said: "Since that encounter, there had been on going tension between them." Lord Bannatyne said the jail-term would have been eight years, but for the guilty plea.
