People in the Gorbals will be some of the first to be invited back into the Citizens Theatre when it re-opens to audiences in September for the first time since 2018.

It's being redesigned with more open spaces while keeping some of the original Victorian architecture.

The iconic venue has been closed since 2018.

Towards the end of the year, it will show a flamboyant take on Beauty and the Beast written by Lewis Hetherington.

He told Clyde 1: "This place is very routed in the community and it feels like everyone owns it and the public feels connected to this venue.

"To be trusted with that feels delightful and it really brings an extra buzz."

A homecoming festival is being held in August where locals will be invited to workshops, tours and exhibitions about the building's past, present and future.

The first production on the mainstage will be Small Acts of Love, a major new work about the bonds formed between families on both sides of the Atlantic in the wake of the Pan Am 103 atrocity.

Dominic Hill, Artistic Director, Citizens Theatre said: "This is a very special moment as we start to unveil an exciting programme of shows and opportunities in the new theatre – for the first time in seven years.

The first few months of programming reflects our commitment to both innovation and tradition, with more to be announced over the coming months.
