The Church of Scotland and the Catholic Church are endorsing a historical declaration pledging greater unity within the Christian faith.

Commissioners at the Church of Scotland’s general assembly gave a ‘ringing endorsement’ to the Saint Margaret Declaration.

It commits the two churches to focusing on their shared faith.

They are also seeking forgiveness for “the hurt and the harm that our forebears did to each other in times past".

Reverend Doctor Iain Greenshields, the moderator at the General Assembly said: “I think we’re honouring God by what we’re doing.

“I think we’re honouring Jesus. I think we’re doing what he’d want us to do.

“We’re doing this, not just for own sake, but for the betterment of Christian relations in Scotland”.

Archbishop Leo Cushley, of the Roman Catholic Church, was also present at the ceremony.

He said: “I don’t think we should underestimate declaring our friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.

“We’ve come on quite a journey in the past fifty to sixty years”.
