A Kilmarnock man is calling for a permanent monument to Sir Billy Connolly to be created in Glasgow.

Jordan Hume has started a petition asking Glasgow City Council to create a tribute to The Big Yin in his home city.

He says the idea came to him after Sir Billy popped into the restaurant in Glasgow where he was working for a spot of lunch: “We had a great chat, we had a great laugh, and I just thought it was great that a man that famous still makes the effort to come to Glasgow.

“He was very happy to speak, and to pose for a picture. I even made him laugh which was a real highlight.”

Although there are already a number of murals depicting Billy Connolly around Glasgow, Jordan says it would be nice to see something a bit different: “As much as he was an actor and a comedian, and those things are depicted on murals, he was a welder for the dockyards. Something reflecting his work for the industry of Glasgow would be nice.

“Or even a wee table where people can sit and have a blether and get to know each other. That’s the message Billy Connolly is always trying to get across- be happy with each other, love each other.”

The petition has already attracted hundreds of signatures.
