Former Scottish F1 driver among seven charged with Covid rule breach after travelling to the Isle of Bute

Seven people, including the Marquess of Bute, have been charged after allegedly breaching coronavirus travel restrictions, by travelling to the Isle of Bute.

Police say three men and four women, one of whom was 90-year-olds old, have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A strict travel ban is currently in place across Scotland, prohibiting movement to or from the rest of the UK, except for essential reasons.

A former racing driver, the 62 year old Marquess divides his time between London and the Isle of Bute where his family owns the Mount Stuart stately home.

During his racing career he competing using the name Johnny Dumfries, and won the Le Mans 24 Hours and was team mate to Ayrton Senna at Lotus in 1986.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "On Monday, 21 December, 2020, we received a report of a group of people travelling to the Isle of Bute in contravention of alleged breaches under the coronavirus legislation.

"Enquiries were carried out and three men aged 32, 62 and 69 years, and four women aged 21, 29, 60 and 90 have been charged and will be subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal.”
