A businessman has been attacked and robbed of his takings by three masked men in North Lanarkshire.

The 65-year-old was getting out of his car in Newarthill on Wednesday when his attackers pulled up in a green-coloured car at 11.05pm.

The men stole a bag containing a four-figure sum of money in the Greenfield Quadrant incident before the car made off along Mossbank Crescent.

Police - who believe the robbery was a targeted attack - said the men are described as wearing dark clothing. A fourth person is also believed to have remained inside the vehicle during the incident.

Detective Constable Graeme Lawrence, of Wishaw CID, said: `"Thankfully the man was not badly injured, however this was very distressing for him to experience.

"Officers are currently checking CCTV and carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the area.

"This robbery was targeted. The suspects knew what they were doing and when and where the man would be at that time.

"It's possible that they had been hanging around the area or may have been in the street or surrounding area in previous days.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw the robbery take place or who has any information that will assist our enquiry to contact the CID at Wishaw police."
