North Lanarkshire Council and Rangers Football Club have signed a deal which will see Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld become the home ground for its womens’ team.
North Lanarkshire Council and Rangers Football Club have signed a deal which will see Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld become the home ground for its womens’ team.
The deal was announced as women’s football enjoys its highest ever profile in the UK with the England national team becoming European champions.
Amy McDonald, manager of women’s and girls’ football at Rangers, said said: “We hope this will be an exciting move for our women’s first-team as we relocate our home games to a new venue.
“It has been fantastic playing our matches at Rangers Training Centre which obviously has state-of-the-art facilities but it has caused some issues around capacity and parking.
“This move will give us the opportunity to provide a more enjoyable matchday experience for supporters and hopefully encourage many more to come and support the squad.”
Beginning with this Sunday’s match against Glasgow Women, Rangers’ senior female squad will play all of its home league and cup fixtures in the 2022/23 season at 8,000-seater Broadwood, as well as UEFA European matches should they successfully qualify.
A council spokesperson said: “We hope this partnership will inspire a new generation of supporters and budding womens’ footballers to get involved in the growth of the women’s game.”
