Body recovered after car plunged into the River Clyde

Police say a body's been found after a car plunged into the River Clyde in Renfrew.

Emergency services were alerted at around 1.20pm this afternoon of reports of a vehicle entering the water near to Lapwing Road.

A search and rescue operation was immediately launched involving officers from Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard.

Police divers have now recovered a woman's body from the vehicle and she was the only person inside. A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death.

The car remains in the water at this time and efforts are ongoing to remove it.

Enquiries are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of how the vehicle came to enter the River Clyde, with crash scene examiners conducting an investigation at the location.
