More than 40 firefighters are tackling a blaze at a former school in Glasgow.

Six fire engines and four support vehicles have been sent to the scene at the former Howford Primary School in Crookston.

Roads have been closed and people in the local area have been warned to keep windows closed as a huge plume of smoke from the blaze could been seen from miles across the city.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokeswoman said the alarm was raised shortly before 4pm.

She said: “SFRS crews are currently tackling a fire within a single-storey derelict building on Crookston Road, Glasgow.

“In attendance are six appliances and four support appliances.''

Police Scotland said in a statement: “Police and fire are currently dealing with a large fire at a disused building on Crookston Road, Glasgow.

“Significant road closures and diversions are in place. We would ask people to try and avoid the area and to close your windows if you live nearby.''

Glasgow City Council said Crookston Road is closed between Paisley Road West and Brockburn Road due to the “significant'' fire at the former school, adding: “Road users should expect significant congestion as traffic attempts to find alternative routes."
