Police are searching for an elderly woman with advanced Alzheimer's disease who has been missing overnight.

Margaret Dutch, known as Peggy, was last seen at Deanston care home in the Blairhill area of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, at about 6.30pm yesterday.

The 83-year-old has recently been receiving palliative care for a chest infection.

Police urged local people to check outbuildings and garages as they appealed for information which could help them trace the missing woman.

She is described as 5ft 2ins, slim, with very short grey hair and blue eyes.

She is believed to be wearing a mustard-coloured jumper, blue trousers and owl slippers.

Inspector Louise Brownlie said: "We are extremely concerned about Peggy, especially given that she has been unwell recently.

"She has gone missing in the past, however she has always been found quickly in the surrounding area and the fact that she has been missing overnight and is not dressed for the cold weather is also extremely worrying.

"Her Alzheimer's is quite advanced and as a result she doesn't interact well with people, and we don't believe she would be able to use public transport.

"I would urge anyone in the area to make a point of checking garages, outhouses, caravans and anywhere else Peggy could possibly be.

"It is critical that we find her as soon as possible.''
